Louisiana’s legal system is different from other American state laws. Initially it was based on Napoleonic code, though it is now gradually falling in line with other American states. Napoleon had based his legal system on Roman law and codified it. The rest of American states, however, follow the English common law, which is based on court precedent. The ruling of one judge may influence the ruling and judgment of another judge. In case of Napoleonic code, the laws are passed by the legislative branch and are interpreted by the judges. Documents and other legal statements need to be written in certain formats that are specific to the state of Louisiana only, and need to be understood accurately.

Louisiana, like all American states, has a large number of lawyers in its cities and counties like Alexandria, Houma, Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, LaPlace, Kenner, Monroe, Bossier City, Lake Charles and New Orleans, practicing in all types of legal fields like insurance, accidents, injuries, divorce, family and business disputes, probate and real estate problems. There is a lawyer for every situation which requires legal attention and formalities.

There are directories of lawyers you can consult in each city and county. You can also surf the web to read these directories. There are law centers or libraries. You can go there and go through the books pertaining to your type of case. The added advantage of consulting such books is that you can know which lawyer or law firm successfully dealt with your type of problem.

You can also consult some of your friends to check the capability of the lawyer you want to contact. But you must be careful: a lawyer who was more capable in your friend’s case may not be as suitable in your case, because of the nature of the case and the lawyer’s area of expertise. Every legal case, like every medical problem, is unique, though it may ostensibly appear similar. Therefore, a lawyer good in one area may not necessarily be good in all cases. In cases of certain citizens whose income is very limited, free legal service is also available.

Any type of “fill in the blank” type of will would be totally invalid. Also, a handwritten will runs the risk of being attacked and also must be proven in court. That is, someone by testimony or affidavit must affirm it was the deceased’s handwriting. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

A notarial will, on the other hand, is self-proving. However, it MUST be signed in front of a notary and two witnesses and everyone must see each other sign. Also, assuming it is prepared by a lawyer, all the issues like forced heirship that are peculiar to Louisiana will be addressed.

The Louisiana flats fishing destination is a popular spot for many fishers. People from all over the country make annual trips to Louisiana to enjoy the nature and sport of reeling in fresh fish. The activity can take skill, concentration and determination in order to get some good catches. The Calcasieu Estuary is a combination of the Calcasieu River and the Ship Channel, both of which run from Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico. The Estuary is a highly recommended and popular fishing spot if you are looking for a great journey and some delicious, fresh trout. Luckily, you can also catch flounder, redfish, and speckled trout. Ladyfish, sheepshead, croakers and variations of trout, such as sand, black and drum, can also be occasionally reeled in at this destination.

If you are adventurous and decide to head out to the oil platforms near the shore, you will be able to catch Spanish mackerel, bluefish, snapper, tripletail, bull redfish, pompano, jack crevalle, cobia and sometimes sharks. You will need to make sure you have the proper equipment for catching the more advanced gamefish species. The proper bait is also essential for whether or not you get a good day’s worth of fish. If you are unfamiliar with the flats, it is highly recommended that you acquire a knowledgeable guide when you go. The guide should be familiar with the location, the waters, the types of fish available and be able to assist you when it comes to catching the fish. The bull redfish are often suggested as good starter fishes.

The bull redfish is popular among beginners because you can carry a rod, reel and ice chest to a spot of your choosing and catch the fish rather easily. Other species of fish in the flats require that you rent a boat and have a higher level or determination. With bull redfish, you can sit back and relax. If you are considering doing a Louisiana flats fishing experience in the summer, it is highly recommended that you bring along a comfortable but easily transportable chair and an umbrella. The flats can received intense sun and become very hot so also bring along refreshing drinks and foods. Also, since it is expected that you will be fishing for quite some time, you can bring along a radio or other entertainment device when the fish are being slow to bite.

You can quote me on that!” says Dr. Edward Overton of the Department of Environmental Sciences School of the Coast and Environment at Louisiana State University.

In Overton’s view, hundreds of miles of coastal marsh were protected by the decision to use dispersant offshore on the Deepwater Horizon oil well — a decision he calls the lesser of two evils.

“It is not correct to say the use of dispersants causes no damage. It does cause damage, but it looks to be minimal damage.”

Overton recently testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works about the effects of dispersants on oil spills.

I’m a wedding and portrait photographer based in southeast Louisiana. I photograph events throughout the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge, Slidell, Mandeville, Covington, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The images you see below and on subsequent pages are blog posts, which are “sneak previews” that I show a few days after every wedding. If you recently attended a wedding that I photographed and wish to view the full gallery, click on the Proofing link.

Louisiana offer real estate buyers many unique features. For one, it is the only state in the union with a heavy French influence. New Orleans is the best example of this with its French Quarter neighborhood with its distinctly French-style buildings. The New Orleans culture is steeped in Jazz tradition and Cajun spices and gumbos. Then of course, you have the state capitol of Baton Rouge. This city still has the French influence without the Mardi Gras and other chaos. It is the home of Louisiana State University, making it the major hub for college football in the state. It currently has a population between 300,000 and 400,000 and is doing very well financially with a median home price that continues to rise in the mist of free-falling national prices.

If you are considering buying real estate in Louisiana, you would do well to sit down with a real estate agent and discuss all your concerns and make a list of your priorities. You might decide whether you want to buy in a quiet, rural area or whether you would prefer property in the hustle and bustle of one of the state’s major cities like Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Just be aware that city real estate is typically more valuable and expensive than property outside of city limits. You should let your real estate agent know if it is important to buy within the boundaries of certain school districts or nearby one of Louisiana’s many colleges or universities. And of course, if you are looking for a rental property it will be helpful to determine whether you are interested in single family homes, duplexes, several units, or large apartment or condo buildings.

Your real estate agent can probably steer you in the right direction when it comes to finding the right mortgage loan for your purchase. You will need to decide between a fixed rate home loan and an adjustable rate mortgage. The former is the safest option, but the latter can offer lower initial rates. You will also need to figure out how much of a down payment you are willing to for over as well as how long you want the loan to last. It could be anywhere from five to forty years. And if you are looking for the best mortgage interest rate you could consider paying a few points in order to buy down the rate and save money in the long run.
